Regretfully, I am decommissioning this Purple Martin house after 30 years. I never did get Martins to inhabit any of my house offerings, but this castle always looked good in the air. The aged pole had been weakened by rust on the lower section and a gusty weather event brought the house down early this spring. For me, getting it back into readiness is a bit more of a commitment than I am willing to make. Time to let someone else try their hand at hosting Purple Martins.
If you are familiar with Nature House you know that their products are, and always have been, the premier Purple Martin houses on the market. They are made from aluminum and therefore Starlings will avoid nesting in them.
Nature House the company seems to have gone by the wayside, but repair parts are still available for their products at this website:
The website lists each of Nature House’s house models, but some of them, including the PMC24, are listed as “Not Currently Available”.
This PMC24 will require a few repair items to make it function as new.
1: Pole with winch assembly
2: Ground socket
3: Porch rail repair kit.
As the pictures show, 5 out of the 6 faces of the hexagonal assembly are in great shape. When the pole collapsed for me, the house fell on one face causing the porches to bend when it hit the ground. These can be straightened with a bit of strategic persuasion. Four of the porch rails were dislodged. The repair kit for those includes small screws to reattach the rails into their spacers in lieu of the rivets that secured them originally. All loosened parts were recovered and will be forwarded to you.
Each of the 24 compartments on this house is equipped with the dry nest subfloor sold as an accessory by Nature House. There is also a full compliment of door block-offs.
If you are really on a shoestring budget, the bare minimum parts investment for this house would be to purchase the winch assembly and re-use (rebuild) the pole by “splinting” it where it is broken and then painting the pole with a high quality paint. The ground socket can be freed from the concrete it is embedded in with a sledgehammer, and be re-used.
I will work with any buyer as best I can to help see this box fly proudly again. Price is firm @ $650. This was the flagship model of the Nature House line and to find a setup like this new would probably be damn near impossible.
To break this down completely for shipping is not something I believe would be in your best interest nor am I inclined to do. If you live anywhere in NE Ohio, it would be well worth the drive to pick this up. Or, if you know anyone who will be traveling thru this area, I can be available to help them pick up for you. If you think the cashier’s check shipper will pick up because you are working out of town doing earthquake relief charity stuff scam will work here - it won’t. Please shop elsewhere. Serious inquiries only.
